Local-first, quota-aware routing for AI coding agents in Herdr. router is a command-line tool that picks an AI coding agent, model, and reasoning effort for a task, then starts that agent for you in a Herdr pane. It filters your subscriptions with fixed rules (enabled models, quota, the 40% reserve on shared accounts), asks TypeSafe to rank what is left and choose an effort, starts the chosen agent (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode), and hands it the task.

Yes. Each run sends the task text to TypeSafe, and routing always calls TypeSafe with no fallback path. Recognizable credentials are rejected locally before the request goes out, and the README says not to put other sensitive narrative data in routing tasks. Configuration, local usage records, decisions, and session history stay on your machine.
Deterministic eligibility rules run before any semantic ranking: enabled models, measured quota, and a reserve floor that defaults to 0.40 on accounts marked shared and cannot be set lower. router status --usage shows remaining quota per account, and router run --dry-run prints the decision card and the exact command it would start without opening a pane or sending anything.
Partly. router run without --dry-run only launches from inside a Herdr pane, since a real run splits a new pane next to the current one and starts the agent there, and Herdr is listed as a prerequisite. --dry-run works anywhere and shows the decision only. You also need Node.js 20 or newer, a TypeSafe key, and at least one agent CLI you are already logged in to, since no provider API keys are used.
The README says capability, cost, and latency figures in models.json are estimates you can adjust. What the model table fixes is which models exist and which effort flags each accepts, not whether an effort suits a given task. Worth knowing too: max and ultra efforts are only offered when the chain's original task text contains the word ultra, and a continued task cannot unlock them.
Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode. Model IDs are defined in packages/router/config/models.json and enabled per account, from cursor:grok-4.6 to openai:gpt-6-astra and openai:opencode.
TypeSafe picks the effort from the chosen model's list. max and ultra are offered only when the task that started the chain contains the word ultra; continued sessions inherit that and cannot unlock them.
Run router run with a task and --dry-run. It prints the decision card and the command it would start without opening a pane or sending anything.
