Jev Synthetic Survey

Independent evaluation running Jev jev-1.13.0 and GPT-4.1 as the same 300 Twin-2K-500 synthetic survey respondents across 24,596 paired cells, finding that asking a yes/no item as a Noul rather than a Choice moved results more than the model gap, at a thirty-fourth of the cost.

About this project

Visual explainer — read it as a page, with the walkthrough and the figures. I asked a decision-only model, TypeSafe's Jev jev-1.13.0, and GPT-4.1 to play the same 300 survey respondents on the public Twin-2K-500 benchmark. That is 108 questions, 16 behavioral-economics tasks, and 24,596 answered cells per arm. Jev returns a probability vector natively. I asked GPT-4.1 to state one in words.

Highlights

  • 300 respondents x 108 questions x 5 arms, with 24,596 answered cells per arm and the two-option comparison criteria fixed in advance.
  • Asked as a Noul, Jev led verbalized GPT-4.1 on all six reported measures, including distribution gap 0.1530 versus 0.1789, at $4.02 versus roughly $136.
  • The same yes/no questions asked as a two-option Choice lost the main comparison, 0.1985 versus 0.1789: how you ask mattered more than which model you used.
  • Jev put probability exactly zero on one option in 16.6% of two-option Choice cells, but in 0.0% of Noul cells.
  • All Jev arms answered every one of 24,596 cells with no errors; a near-constant +0.18 pricing bias accounts for most of its yes/no error.

Watch out

MIT licensed, but this is independent, self-funded work: the Noul arm was built after seeing the Choice result and was never eligible to settle the pre-registered comparison. Calibration missed its 0.05 bar for every arm, a limit of demographics-only grounding.

Independent pre-registered audit of Jev on Spanish: 19,200 calls over 3,200 paired items on XNLI, PAWS-X, MASSIVE and Belebele. A Spanish state costs 3.0-6.4 accuracy points and roughly doubles ECE on the two hardest tasks, while Spanish instructions change nothing; a CLI reruns the same comparison on your own data.
