Jev Vs. Open Alternatives

Notebook benchmark that compares Jev with open models and specialised tools on five document-pipeline chores: language detection (Choice(12)), page orientation (Choice(4)), RVL-CDIP classification (Choice(16)), bundle splitting and parse-tier triage, with liteparse doing all PDF rendering and OCR work.

About this project

Material comparing jev (TypeSafe AI's hosted decision model) with open alternatives on four document-pipeline chores, with liteparse (pdfium + tesseract) doing all the PDF work. build-corpus --n N rebuilds one corpus at a different size. Or, just read the notebook to follow along. Small "binaries" over jevvs/pdftools.py, installed by uv sync: jev docs: — models & pricing, confidence, jaggedness.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Five chores asked as Choice(2) up to Choice(16) over generated, labelled corpora.
  • Compares Jev against Qwen3.5-4B on Modal, local Laya and jeff encoders, and lingua/tesseract OSD.
  • build-corpus all downloads, renders and OCRs PDFs locally in about 5-10 minutes.
  • Ships liteparse CLIs: pdf-info, pdf-text, pdf-render and pdf-orient.

Watch out

MIT licensed. The repository has no GitHub description or topics and this is a notebook-scale evaluation, so results depend on generated corpora rather than a published leaderboard; the Modal comparison row requires a Modal account.

Independent pre-registered audit of Jev on Spanish: 19,200 calls over 3,200 paired items on XNLI, PAWS-X, MASSIVE and Belebele. A Spanish state costs 3.0-6.4 accuracy points and roughly doubles ECE on the two hardest tasks, while Spanish instructions change nothing; a CLI reruns the same comparison on your own data.
