Classifier Bench

Head-to-head benchmark of fast typed classifiers, TypeSafe Jev, OpenAI Decisions and Cloudflare Clef, against Claude models on a frozen, labeled corpus of 2,321 cases across 31 tasks, measuring accuracy, calibration, p95/p99 latency and registry-priced cost.

About this project

A head-to-head benchmark for fast typed classifiers against LLMs. On the same requests, how fast, how cheap, how well calibrated and how close to the expected labels is a purpose-built classification API compared with an LLM such as Claude Haiku or Sonnet asked for schema-constrained output?

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Zero runtime dependencies: Python standard library only, with an offline dry-run mode that needs no keys and spends nothing
  • Rough registry-priced costs for one pass over 2,321 cases: Jev $0.02, Clef Flash $0.05, Decisions $0.07, Clef $0.14, Haiku $2.30, Sonnet $4.65
  • Reports ECE, MCE, Brier score and reliability tables, p50-p99 latency, token spend, self-consistency, cascades and load at 1, 4 and 16 concurrency
  • Head-to-head statistics include clustered-bootstrap intervals, Cohen's kappa, exact McNemar tests and an escalation cascade sweep from t=0.5 to 0.99
  • Runs refuse to exceed --max-cost (default $5) and freeze protocol.json, registry.json and SHA256SUMS before the first call

MIT for code and the authored corpus; public samples keep their own licenses. Labels were checked by LLM-assisted annotators, and the author discloses building other Jev tools.

Independent pre-registered audit of Jev on Spanish: 19,200 calls over 3,200 paired items on XNLI, PAWS-X, MASSIVE and Belebele. A Spanish state costs 3.0-6.4 accuracy points and roughly doubles ECE on the two hardest tasks, while Spanish instructions change nothing; a CLI reruns the same comparison on your own data.

Reproducible billing and stability measurement of Jev's fan-out behavior across 2,976 requests to jev-1.13-20260917: asking N questions in one call bills the state once, with raw data, exact invoice checks and a batched-versus-single answer comparison.

Independent evaluation running Jev jev-1.13.0 and GPT-4.1 as the same 300 Twin-2K-500 synthetic survey respondents across 24,596 paired cells, finding that asking a yes/no item as a Noul rather than a Choice moved results more than the model gap, at a thirty-fourth of the cost.
