LAVOIR: Teaching a Single-Pass Decision Encoder When and What to Ask with Amortized Value of Information (arXiv 2609.30706)

LAVOIR extends the Laya single-pass decision encoder so one forward pass returns both the decision distribution and, for every candidate missing slot, the expected gain from asking the user about it. Its question policy matches a greedy oracle on seen schemas and is 14.1 points more accurate than never asking.

Highlights

  • VOI targets need no human labels: schema rules supply gold decisions and an LLM only verbalizes text.
  • A Gini-impurity cap bounds predicted value by what a calibrated model can still gain.
  • On seen schemas, decisions are statistically indistinguishable from the Bayes ceiling.
  • Question policy matches a greedy oracle VOI policy on seen schemas: AUC 0.799 vs 0.797.
  • On Laya's twelve benchmarks it beats Laya's reported scores on seven and answers in a 31 ms median.

Watch out

arXiv preprint posted September 25, 2026 (cs.AI, cs.CL) by Furkan Yilmaz, Habibe Aleyna Tasdemir, and Muhammed Faruk Gozay; 11 pages, 3 figures, 7 tables. The headline comparisons are against Laya's reported scores rather than reruns, the VOI targets come from schema rules rather than human labels, and the latency median was measured on a single GH200.

Reads a typed decision from one prefill of a pretrained instruction-tuned model by restricting the next-token distribution to option tokens, then corrects label and position bias with no gradient steps. Averaging over cyclic rotations lowers order-flip rates and raises accuracy on 11 of 11 models.
