About this project

total-agent-memory (TAM) is an open-source memory server for AI coding agents. Coding agents start every session without memory of earlier ones, so decisions, fixes and project conventions have to be explained again. TAM stores decisions, solutions, facts, errors and session summaries on your machine and returns them through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so any MCP client can use it without code changes.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • The default profile makes no LLM call on write or search, so a rerun returns the same result.
  • Recall fuses BM25, locally computed dense embeddings, fuzzy matching and a knowledge graph with reciprocal rank fusion.
  • Facts take validity intervals through kg_add_fact and kg_at; a newer value can retire the older single-valued fact.
  • Installs from PyPI, an npm connector, Docker, or Claude Code and Codex plugins; tam setup detects eight clients.

Watch out

The README never mentions Jev or TypeSafe. Nothing in it describes a decision model checking memories for contradictions; the closest documented behaviour is validity intervals on facts and retiring a superseded single-valued value. The tool surface is large - 77 MCP tools are documented - so what you adopt is much more than the two calls the quick start shows. Retrieval numbers are the project's own: LongMemEval recall_any 95.1%, LoCoMo R@5 0.607 and BEAM at 1M-token scale 0.448, all on the default profile, and none are reproduced here. First runs download embedding models, roughly 850 MB for the test prewarm, and the full suite takes 15 to 20 minutes. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
