Jev Compaction — picaye

Compacts Hermes transcripts by scoring every tool call with Jev: stale calls are dropped, stale results truncated, and protected tools such as write_file and patch are always kept. Nothing is ever summarised.

About this project

Context compaction for Hermes sessions that never summarises. Every tool call is scored by TypeSafe's Jev model, and only the calls and results that are no longer needed are removed or truncated. Everything kept stays verbatim. Adapted from tamaratran/fast-jev-compaction (MIT), with two additions described below.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Two noul questions per call - keepCall and keepResult - resolved against a threshold that defaults to 0.5.
  • PROTECTED_TOOLS overrides the model: write_file, patch, memory and five others are rescued, call kept.
  • User and assistant text comes out byte-identical, and the report checks for orphaned calls and results.
  • Splits transcripts into windows of 2, 4, 8 when the upstream library throws on an oversized state.

Watch out

This is a Hermes adapter, not a general compaction library: it reads the sessions and messages tables of ~/.hermes/state.db and only reads it, writing a JSON file instead, and the JSON files under ~/.hermes/sessions are described as a legacy mirror being retired. Install runs ./setup.sh, which needs Node 18+ and builds the upstream library from source because the npm package its README names is not published and npm install returns 404. Jev's hard request limit is 32k and the upstream library throws rather than fitting a larger state, so windowing is load-bearing, not an optimisation. The report labels are in German (Konsistenz, Integritat, Abdeckung), which matters if you are grepping output. The README section on measured results is cut off partway through in the copy reviewed here, so only the sessions listed before that point are documented; it publishes no token cost, no price and no latency per compaction. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
