About this project

A driving simulator on real Canadian streets. Take on the same challenge as an AI driver, then rewind and see why it made every choice. ▶ Play it in your browser — no install, no account, no API key. Most self-driving demos ask you to trust a video. This one hands you the wheel.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Six challenges: a car door opening beside a cyclist, a foggy junction, a rainy-night crossing, a stop in snow, a merging car, a pedestrian behind a building.
  • Every decision senses the visible world, proposes manoeuvres, simulates them three seconds ahead and filters unsafe ones before any driver chooses.
  • Bring your own driver: load a JS agent, run the fixed evaluation suite, and compare safety, comfort, latency and cost against a saved baseline.
  • Runs with `uv run server.py` and no frontend build; bundled maps and Three.js let the Rules driver run offline once Python dependencies are installed.

Watch out

The README is careful about what the passing results mean: Rules and the cautious starter agent cleared the six authored challenges in recorded local checks, and the same paragraph says those individual runs do not guarantee performance across every map, seed or live model response. A high coaching score is explicitly not an evaluation pass — passes require arrival with no audited collision, red light, missed stop or failed yield, and under a second off-road. It is an independent research project, not affiliated with TypeSafe AI, and not a system for controlling a real vehicle. The hosted demo runs only the free Rules and starter agents; live Jev needs a server-side key with spend and rate guards. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
