TypeSafe Image Diffusion

A FastAPI app that turns a text prompt into 16x16 pixel art by asking Jev 256 parallel Choice questions, one per pixel over a 16-colour palette, then refining the grid.

About this project

A diffusion style image model built out of a general classifier that was never meant to draw. Jev (via TypeSafe System One) is a judgment model. You give it state, ask multiple choice questions, and it picks answers with confidence scores. It classifies things. It does not draw things.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Each pixel question carries its row, column, distance from the centre and the prompt, and picks one of 16 colours.
  • Refinement passes resend every pixel with its previous colour and 3x3 neighbourhood; a slider sets 0 to 5 passes.
  • The response returns grid, history for the animation and usage, which grows because each pass is another 256 calls.
  • Sending every pixel the full grid returned 400 max_tokens_exceeded; the local neighbourhood fixed it and improved output.

Watch out

There are no diffusion weights and no training here - it is 256 classifier decisions per image, and the refinement loop is a rough imitation of diffusion behaviour rather than a sampler. Token numbers are large: pass 0 alone used around 57k input tokens before the neighbourhood fix and around 39k after it, and the response's usage block is where you would look for the true cost since the README publishes no dollar figure and no pass-by-pass breakdown. The grid is a fixed 16x16 with a 16-colour palette and the documented request body takes only a prompt and refinement_passes, so there is no documented size or palette control. The four sample images are labelled as the best results the author could get, with no prompts, seeds or scoring attached, so they cannot be reproduced or compared. You need your own TYPESAFE_API_KEY and start_server.sh, and the browser UI is at 127.0.0.1:8000. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
