James Library

R.A.I.N. Lab is a local-first research environment. Four constrained perspectives investigate a question, quoted spans are checked against a local paper corpus, and experiments are pre-registered with host code, not a model, deciding pass, fail or inconclusive.

(Officially move to Lop Nur Twin) R.A.I.N. Lab is an experimental scientific-agent architecture that separates fast local judgment, independent probabilistic evaluation, multi-agent deliberation, evidence, and authorization into distinct computational layers.🐙(Predates Karpathy's AutoResearch)

About this project

Most AI systems stop at the answer. R.A.I.N. begins there. What happens after a model proposes an answer? A researcher still needs to separate a claim from an observation, test it, decide what may happen, and keep the evidence. R.A.I.N. is building that research and decision layer. A local-first research environment where four constrained AI perspectives investigate a question, challenge one another, and leave an inspectable record. Think with a room that is allowed to disagree.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • `python rain_lab.py --mode demo` runs offline with Python alone: no model, key, Rust build or third-party packages.
  • Chat checks quoted spans against the citation corpus and marks turns without verified spans as ungrounded by default.
  • Success and failure criteria are registered before the run, and every outcome including inconclusive or error is published.
  • A failed experiment stays on the record: typography-normalized quotes were rejected 0/50 while all 50 controls passed.

Watch out

The offline demo's four-perspective discussion is scripted, so it shows the shape of the process rather than model behaviour, and a verified quote only means the text occurs in a source. The hosted browser interface runs on its own backend and the README warns not to assume it shares the local privacy boundary. The recorded experiments mix a real quote-grounding gate with simulated trials; the offline plan path runs no model and no instrument, and the operator attestation is explicit but not an authenticated identity. Laya, Jev, hardware and neuroscience sidecars are optional, and the digest does not document how the Jev sidecar is configured. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.

The request shape barely changes across surfaces; the surrounding contract does. When to call the API directly and when a gateway, a Worker binding, or a router entry earns its extra hop.
