Does pruning rewrite or delete my stored session history?

Original session entries are left alone. The extension clones changed messages and returns a transformed request view, with protection and recall controls appending metadata or a reference message instead.

What runs automatically versus what the model must call?

Dedup and error purge run automatically every call. The compress tool only runs when the model invokes it, biased by soft, strong, hard, and iteration nudges tied to configurable context limits.

How do I install it and where does its state live?

Install with pi install from npm or git, or clone manually into the extensions directory. User settings, prompt overrides, debug log, and lifetime counters live under a separate state directory, not beside the code.

What is the catch with experimental Jev context selection?

It is off by default and configured only from the owner-global config, never from repo overrides. Shadow mode only observes, numeric cutoffs are restricted to a narrow low range, and none is calibrated or recommended yet.

What exactly gets pruned, and what is protected?

Deduplication keeps the newest result for a repeated toolName plus canonical args and replaces older copies with a marker naming the duplicate call. The error purge strips arguments from failed calls after N turns while preserving the error message. Six tools are never pruned regardless of config: compress, write, edit, todo, task and skill. Turn protection makes the last N user-bounded turns immune, with a maxSteps cap so a long agentic turn still exposes older steps.

What does the compress tool actually do?

It is LLM-callable and replaces a span of tool results with a technical summary, in one of two modes: message, with an explicit per-id list, or range, with a start and end span. Four nudge surfaces bias the model toward using it, a soft or strong in-system-prompt nudge past minContextLimit, a hard nudge above maxContextLimit, and an iteration nudge after N messages without a user reply.

How do I install it, and what license is it?

AGPL-3.0-or-later, and a port of @tarquinen/opencode-dcp tailored to pi's extension API. Three install paths: pi install npm:@davecodes/pi-dcp, pi install git:github.com:Davidcreador/pi-dcp, or a manual clone into ~/.pi/agent/extensions/pi-dcp. All three produce identical runtime behaviour and pi auto-discovers the extension; npm run check runs local validation.
