Footwork

A computer-use agent for the browser and for native macOS apps that puts a Jev guard in front of the driver: claimed completions are checked against observed state and the trajectory, irreversible actions pass a gate, and Jev can take the mechanical steps itself.

About this project

A verified computer-use agent, for the browser and for native macOS apps. Footwork puts a cheap, calibrated guard from TypeSafe Jev in front of whoever drives: every claimed completion is checked against observed state and the trajectory before it counts, every irreversible action passes a gate, and every action comes back with a receipt saying what visibly changed. On top of that guard, Jev can also take the fast, mechanical steps itself (System 1) while the driver (System 2) keeps the reading, comparing and…

Highlights

  • Three arms on the same tasks: stock browser-use, guarded with the LLM behind verification and no Jev actions, and dual with Jev taking the steps.
  • Across 55 live-site tasks the guarded and dual arms recorded zero false completions, at roughly two Jev calls per task and at the LLM's own cost.
  • Every action returns a receipt saying what visibly changed, and nothing dispatches on an id taken from an older observation.
  • Native macOS driving runs in the background through the Cua Driver accessibility tree; all 15 coexistence cases passed in the default mode.

Watch out

It needs macOS with Accessibility granted to the process that runs it, plus a TypeSafe key, and the Python package inside is jevdual rather than footwork. Two measured ideas did not pay off: System 2 delegating bounded subgoals to Jev cost more for no extra completions, with most executor failures later traced to software defects that are fixed in the tree but not yet re-measured, and telling the driver the contract raised model requests 21 percent per task with completions unchanged. Letting Jev act saved driver work but not money. Native app support is explicitly still experimental. The README is also candid that the Rust crate is not the bottleneck, since Jev and the driver are, and that the arbiter thresholds in arbiter.toml are starting points, none tuned on heldout data. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
