Jev Deepresearch

Unfold, a depth-crawling research agent that routes every per-page decision through Jev while a general model is called only twice per run. Pages fan out, get triaged and judged one at a time, and the survivors converge into a cited report.

Deep research crawl where Jev (a System One model) makes every per-page decision and an LLM only plans and writes

About this project

A depth-crawling research agent built to find out what a System One model is good for. Jev (TypeSafe AI) generates no text: you hand it a state and typed questions — a choice, a score, a yes/no — and get calibrated probabilities back in one forward pass, in a few hundred milliseconds, for a fraction of a cent. That turns out to be exactly the shape of every decision a research crawl has to make per page.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • The expensive model runs twice per run to plan searches and write the report; Jev runs once per page, SearXNG once per query.
  • Four typed questions per page read: on_topic, has_primary_data, worth_expanding and a four-level relevance score normalised to 0-1.
  • Outbound links get a batched yes/no each, and the top few are queued at page relevance times link confidence.
  • A per-query yield table of found, kept, cut, unreachable and skipped counts triggers new queries while workers are idle.

Watch out

Two keys are required, TypeSafe for Jev and OpenRouter for the writing model, and web search goes through a SearXNG node with the JSON format enabled; the shipped setup assumes one bound to loopback on another machine and forwards it over SSH, so without the tunnel a run fails on the first search. Nothing is forwarded to the browser, every outbound call is made from the server process, but fetched page text and thumbnails stay in data/ on your machine and are meant never to be committed. The measurements are a single run: a depth-3 crawl of a test question over 22 pages that fetched 48, kept 17, cut 30, left one unreachable and skipped 8, using 63 Jev calls at 438 ms average for $0.005, with the report adding $0.039, compared against a ring-at-a-time crawl of the same question that fetched 120 and kept 2. Unreachable pages are bot-protection 403s and client-rendered pages with no text in the HTML, and both get a second try in headless Chromium. Thresholds are code-side constants, not tuned. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.

Most Jev accuracy problems are state problems. What belongs in a state, what is a pre-made judgment to leave out, and why naming the slice you ask about matters more than the wording.
