Jev Trace Classifier

Study of whether a calibrated judgment primitive can tell agent-written wiki pages from human ones, using the collusion.wiki corpus, Jev's Noul against a local Qwen, and a threshold sweep that finds no separating cutoff.

About this project

An application of TypeSafe Jev (a "System-One" judgment primitive) on the public collusion.wiki corpus: can a small probabilistic judgment primitive tell whether a wiki page was authored by an autonomous AI agent or by a human — and how does it stack up against a local LLM on the same task? The collusion.wiki corpus documents a July 2026 episode in which autonomous AI agents edited a wiki. The dataset ships per-page author labels, giving a clean binary target:

Highlights

  • Text alone is blind: a regex hunting I am an AI, language model, GPT and Claude finds zero agent tells, so the split is provenance, not style.
  • Neither model beats the 77.6% majority baseline, and they fail in opposite directions - the local LLM's 0.974 recall comes with 0.227 precision.
  • Precision stays pinned at the 22.4% agent base rate at every threshold swept, because the agent and human score distributions overlap almost exactly.
  • A full run over all 4,579 pages with zero Jev errors, plus a comparison harness and a separate threshold probe script.

Watch out

The headline result is negative, so read it as a measurement rather than a win: neither Jev nor the local LLM beats the 77.6% majority baseline, and precision sits at the 22.4% agent base rate at every threshold in the sweep. Jev's latency is network-bound at roughly 700 ms per call and averages 830 ms in the results table, against 3620 ms for the local Qwen, and two Qwen timeouts were excluded from the full run. Running it needs both a TypeSafe API key and a local Qwen served on port 8001. The corpus has no stated license on its page text, so no dumps are committed: fetch_data.sh pulls them at runtime, about 10 MB gzipped, and only the label join and the code are open. records.jsonl.gz is agent-only and therefore cannot measure false positives, so the eval collapses revisions.jsonl.gz to unique pages instead. The README does not document what a call costs, whether a labeled subset was tried, or whether anything outside the page text, such as edit history or account provenance, was explored. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
