Jevtrafficsim

Chicago traffic simulator where Jev sets citywide signal policy and two deterministic baselines replay the identical scenario: one car crosses the city while Fixed and Adaptive run headlessly against the same spawn list, seed and incident script.

About this project

An interactive Chicago traffic simulator that runs one experiment: you watch a single car cross real Chicago geography while the whole city simulates around it, and the same scenario is also played out by two deterministic baselines. Live: deploy URL is published with the release notes. The visible run asks Jev for citywide policy. Fixed and Adaptive play the same scenario headlessly, in a worker of their own, so the trip you are watching never stalls. The label reports what actually governed the visible run.

Highlights

  • Jev never sets a lamp — it answers corridor and region weights plus a pressure scale, while phase order, min/max green, all-red and starvation stay in code.
  • No ego privilege: the request carries no ego vehicle id, route or destination, checked by schema, observation-frame and source scans.
  • Fair comparison is enforced by a fingerprint over trip, traffic level, driver, seed and horizon; runs with different ids are never placed side by side.
  • Accepted policies are recorded with the simulated time they were accepted, so a trace replays offline with zero network calls.

Watch out

The credit for the Jev column is narrow: the model produces a bounded citywide policy on a refresh schedule, and while the label reads Jev, the accounting underneath — held, invalid and fallback milliseconds, per-refresh outcomes and reasons — lives in the run's own record. Traces do not bind a code or geography version yet, so an old trace is not a cross-version replay guarantee. No winner score is computed by design; every panel number is a field of a real run, and a run a human touched is marked non-comparable rather than quietly compared. Refresh is paced from the gateway's advertised request limit rather than from the simulation, and the direct API path was probed once and returned no rate-limit metadata at all, so that assumption is thinner than the gateway one. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
