About this project

A prototype of a "System One" decision model, inspired by TypeSafe AI's Jev. The model takes a state (context) and a set of typed questions. In a single forward pass it returns calibrated probability distributions over a fixed set of answers, with no text generation. The implementation targets Qwen/Qwen3.5-0.8B-Base. See PLAN.md for milestones. Current scope is inference only; training and fine-tuning (PLAN.md M2) are on hold.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Runs every question and answer branch through one prefix-forked cache, measured at 8 to 19 times faster than a full forward per branch.
  • A tree attention mask cannot isolate sibling branches inside the hybrid model's recurrent layers, which is why prefix-forking is used instead.
  • Choice options are always rendered in sorted key order, and tests assert question and option order invariance below 1e-5.
  • Three scorers are implemented: letter logits, answer likelihood with optional PMI, and linear heads at a read token that stay untrained.

Watch out

This is not a Jev reimplementation and the README does not pretend otherwise: TypeSafe has not published Jev's architecture, so only the clearly labeled public-facts section comes from TypeSafe's documentation and everything else is the author's hypothesis about how such a model could work. Scope is inference only. Training with adapters and heads is on hold, the read-token heads are untrained until then, and the zero-shot baselines are CPU runs at n=100 where the README puts the confidence interval on accuracy at about plus or minus nine points. Three of the five milestones are unstarted, including temperature fitting, the calibration pass and serving. The measured speedups come from single-GPU runs on Turing cards, where the linear-attention kernel dominates rather than the matrix multiplications, and the author's own hardware notes include a GPU dropping off the bus mid-benchmark. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
