Jevpolicy

TypeScript runtime that keeps Jev's probabilities out of the decision path. YAML policies declare preconditions, typed questions and ordered rules; it returns a decision plus an audit trace, records fingerprinted signals as JSONL, and replays offline without calling the provider. Ships shadow evaluation.

About this project

JevPolicy is an open-source TypeScript decision runtime that turns probabilistic judgments from Jev, accessed through Vercel AI Gateway, into versioned, deterministic, replayable, observable application decisions. JevPolicy separates probabilistic judgment from deterministic application policy. An application supplies state and facts, Jev answers typed questions with probabilities, and ordered YAML rules turn those signals into a decision.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Deterministic preconditions run before any provider call, and timeouts, invalid responses or provider errors map only to declared fallbacks, never to an allow.
  • Replay reuses question-fingerprinted signals from the decision log, so a policy can be re-run offline with no provider call at all.
  • Shadow evaluation runs a compatible candidate against the same provider request, and incompatible policy pairs are rejected before the provider is invoked.
  • The OpenTelemetry observer emits decision spans and fallback counters but deliberately excludes state, facts, signals, prompts and provider responses.

Watch out

Node 22.18 or newer is required and anything live needs a Vercel AI Gateway key, though validate and diff run entirely offline. Replay only works when the record actually holds the signals: a record created by a terminating precondition or a provider fallback may be missing the full set and cannot be replayed against policies that require it. Raw state recording defaults to none, full or redacted recording must be opted into, and redacted needs a programmatic redaction hook. Shadow comparison assumes a compatible pair, meaning the same policy name, fact contract, question names and question fingerprints, and only the active envelope should drive side effects. Logs can contain sensitive facts, signals and state, and the README says to keep them out of version control and never put credentials in declared facts. If persistence fails you get a RecorderError whose envelope still carries the decision already computed. There is nothing here about latency, per-decision cost or how well the signals are calibrated. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
