Jevcumber

Cucumber-style browser tests with no step definitions: Playwright opens the page, Jev picks among the controls actually present what each Gherkin step means, and a lockfile makes reruns deterministic.

About this project

jevcumber.dev — site and demo video. Write Cucumber tests with just the .feature file. No step definitions. That's the whole test. There is no glue code behind it. jevcumber opens your site in a real browser with Playwright and, for each Gherkin step, asks Jev — TypeSafe AI's fast System One model — what the step means on the page in front of it.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Jev only picks and never invents: jevcumber lists the page's buttons, fields and links plus your step's literal values, and Jev picks among them.
  • The lockfile is the CI story — --frozen replays it with no API calls, no API key and no model variance, and fails on a missing or stale entry.
  • Low confidence is a hard stop rather than a guess: below the floor it prints the candidates it was torn between, with their percentages, and asks you to reword.
  • Page-sourced values need a 0.75 floor against the 0.6 default, and live runs cap at four workers because Jev has its own rate limits.

Watch out

Everything absent from the lockfile is decided by a model reading your page, so the first run on a new suite is where the risk sits — and the README reports no pass rate, no comparison against hand-written step definitions, and nothing on how often a real application's UI churn forces re-resolution. A described expectation such as "I see an article about bagels" is judged once and then pinned to the page title or a heading, replayed afterwards as a plain check, which is a weaker assertion than the sentence you wrote; only expectations with no single piece of evidence, or whose best evidence is a link or button name, stay live-judged and need the 0.75 floor. Healing cuts both ways: a recorded control that disappears is re-resolved and flagged, but the fix lands in the lockfile, so that diff needs reviewing like any other change. Step phrasing matters more here than in plain Cucumber — quote your data, name controls as they appear, navigate by literal URL or --base-url — and a directory literally named explain or install-browser has to be passed as ./explain. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
