Oko

Local code search for coding agents: ripgrep and BM25 shortlist function-level chunks, Jev Noul relevance questions run across parallel requests, and accepted excerpts return to Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode or Pi through MCP or the `oko ask` command.

About this project

Help your coding agent find code faster and use fewer tokens. Oko helps Codex, Claude Code, and OpenCode spend less time searching and fewer tokens reading irrelevant code. It delivers relevant source snippets through MCP, and answers a code question as you send it, so your agent can get to the task sooner. Gains vary by task and coding tool. Each benchmark's method and caveats are in its section below.

Highlights

  • Agent sessions on nine tasks: 60-63% fewer tokens, 47-58% faster and 75-86% fewer tool calls versus built-in search.
  • Agent Retrieval Bench: MRR 0.37 versus 0.24 for the best published method across 345 tasks in six languages.
  • Delivers via MCP with `oko setup --client claude|opencode|pi|all`; a prompt hook answers a question before the first turn.
  • MIT licensed; bundled ripgrep and checksum-verified binaries for macOS and Linux.

Watch out

MIT licensed. Jev ranking needs a TypeSafe API key (keyword-only mode works without one), macOS binaries are unsigned, and Windows is not supported by the installer.

MCP server and Claude Code plugin that files each captured note, link or meeting line with one Jev request: kind, project, action and duplicate questions answered in parallel. Routes to a project only at 0.45 or above, marks a duplicate only at 0.70 with a matching item, and stores text verbatim in append-only JSONL.
