Do I need an API key just to try it? What costs?

Mechanical checks run with no key and fail the build on what they find. The Jev review notes need a Vercel AI Gateway key, bill that key, and cache between runs with a dry-run cost preview.

What does it actually flag in UI and type?

Flagged transition-all, ease-in, long transitions, scale-zero entrances, and framer-motion imports, plus straight quotes, hyphens for dashes, and missing unit spacing. Profiles scope product, writing, instructions, code, or all.

How do I block commits without slowing everyone down?

Add a pre-commit hook via lefthook, husky, or lint-staged after init on Node 24.11+. The taste script defaults to the product profile; use the code profile for queries, sync calls, and test quality.

Does Jev auto-fail the build on vague copy?

No. Vague errors, empty states with no action, bare Confirm labels, and unsupported claims go to Jev as probabilities. Only promoted checks block; the rest report.

Which profiles can I run?

product for tsx, jsx, and css; writing for md, mdx, and README; instructions for AGENTS.md, skills, and plans; code for source, tests, and CI; or all. Init's taste script defaults to the product profile, so switch profiles to match what you are checking.

What does the search profile look for?

Pages with no metadata, a missing metadataBase, a missing sitemap or robots file, noindex on public pages, and canonical URLs pointing at a dev host. These sit in the mechanical check set, so their findings can fail a run.

Can I check drafts against my own voice?

Yes. Add a rule pack to taste-lint.config.json pointing at your ghostwriter profile, and drafts get checked against your own voice. The rules come from Taste Training and the Agent Skills project, and the tool is MIT-licensed.
