Laya Vision

An independent fork of Laya that replaces its text encoder with a small vision-language model, giving calibrated typed decisions over an image plus text in one forward pass from a 201M-parameter SmolVLM-256M backbone.

Image inputs for Laya: calibrated, non-generative typed decisions over images + text (SmolVLM-256M backbone)

Highlights

  • The recommended checkpoint is thaitea/laya-vision, 201M parameters: A-OKVQA 59.8%, ScienceQA 82.4%, VQAv2 yes/no 71.4%, with a 41 ms median predict on an L4.
  • Answers are choice, noul, and score over an image plus optional text; each option is cut to 48 tokens and the instructions get what is left.
  • Inputs are cut to fit token budgets, and an answer whose question was cut carries a truncated field saying what was dropped; strict=True raises instead.
  • It plays games from pixels: ViZDoom basic 0.99, Atari Freeway 0.81, Acrobot 0.76 on the autoresearch games benchmark where 0 is random play.
  • Install is pip install -e . plus torchvision; ModernVBERT needs transformers 5.3 or newer; a free CPU Space answers in about 3 seconds per image.

Quickstart

python
import laya
from PIL import Image

agent = laya.load_vlm("thaitea/laya-vision")
result = agent.predict(
    {"image": Image.open("photo.jpg"), "note": "customer says it arrived broken"},
    {"category": {"type": "choice", "instructions": "What kind of item is this?",
                  "criteria": ["electronics", "clothing", "furniture", "food", "other"]}},
)
print(result["answers"]["category"])

Watch out

README reviewed 2026-10-15. The repo calls itself an experimental research project, not affiliated with Convai Innovations, the authors of Laya. VQAv2 yes/no numbers come from an image-based re-split and are not comparable to published VQAv2 results, score answers are meaningful only on the two checkpoints trained on rubric data, and L4 latency varies about 50% between hosts.
