Dsh Plugin Jev Effort Selector

A DSH plugin that asks Jev once per turn how much reasoning effort a message deserves and rewrites that turn's effort level, so greetings stop running at high and follow-ups after a complex refactor stop running at low.

| Jev-driven reasoning effort per message: per-model ladders derived from what each model advertises, a fixed-size context envelope so follow-ups inherit topic depth, ties break upward, silent fallback on every failure path.

Highlights

  • Levels are derived from what each model declares, taking the lowest, medium and high, and deliberately never max or xhigh.
  • A context envelope of roughly 500 to 800 tokens carries the previous turn's facts, drawn from the harness session log, not plugin memory.
  • Two questions per call: which level, and whether this message continues the last task. One hard rule; everything else listens to Jev.
  • Any manual pick in the selector counts as manual, so Jev skips that turn and subagents are never touched.

Watch out

The key never enters settings.yaml: it goes through DSH's credential service, where the settings field can only write and describe status, with no field that could carry the key back to the browser, and precedence runs inherited process environment, then ~/.dsh/.credentials.yaml, then the working-directory .env, then ~/.dsh/.env. Two behaviours surprise people. With Jev on, the model selector follows the plugin's choice because it reflects the level recorded for the last actual request, so disabling Jev leaves the session on whichever level Jev last chose. And if a provider sets compat.forceAdaptiveThinking: true, the off level does not actually disable thinking, only drops it to the minimum, which is gateway behaviour the plugin cannot override. The projection cache under ~/.dsh/storages/session_projcache holds plaintext fragments of user messages and assistant endings, a derived copy of the log. There is also an explicit constraint on state: the plugin writes nothing to the session log, because the persistence loader would reject sessions containing event types outside the harness vocabulary. Chip display works in the web profile only, while the decision core runs in tui and headless too. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
