Jev Piano

An experimental web app where Jev — handed typed chord questions, not text — improvises piano: describe a mood like a slow, sad waltz and it decides harmony, metre and tempo bar by bar. Live at jev-piano.zammitpaul.com.

Jev cannot generate a single note. Given a piano and the right questions, it improvises anyway.

Highlights

  • Jev decides the home note, scale, metre, tempo, each bar's chord, the melody shape and when the piece ends; code is only the instrument.
  • Its chord bank is all 12 roots as major, minor and dominant seventh — nothing filters to the key, yet a typical piece picked in-key chords 16 times out of 16.
  • Two Jev calls take about 600 ms together and yield roughly ten seconds of music; a piece stops after sixteen phrases whatever Jev decides.
  • Grew from an X exchange: @BaselAshraf81 put five dollars on whoever could make Jev play, and @LamplighterPaul suggested giving it music theory.
  • Extra keys rotate round-robin as TYPESAFE_API_KEY_2, _3 and so on, or as a comma-separated list; GET /api/health reports how many were found.

Quickstart

bash
npm ci && npm run build

Watch out

Copy reviewed against the repo README on 2026-10-15. The in-key and timing figures are the project's own account of a typical piece, not an external benchmark, and the README labels the project experimental. No pricing or latency table is published beyond the Jev API itself.
