Jev Chorale Lab

An experiment in two parts, done in one day: SATB part-writing exercises given to Jev with no musical hints and graded by rules, compared with Claude models on accuracy and cost, plus a piano mode where Jev picks chords forever.

Highlights

  • Jev's music theory is lexical: it matches a pitch to a chord spelled beside it, but Roman numerals are chance level and voice leading is out of reach.
  • Framing helped: showing only the previous, this and next beat halved errors and turned harmonization into 70–91% recognizable chords at a third the cost.
  • Its characteristic failure is the fixed point: a deterministic model with no memory of its own moves repeats or oscillates forever.
  • Against Claude at low effort, Sonnet 5 makes a third of Jev's errors at ~50x the cost and ~10x the time; Haiku 4.5 is roughly Jev's equal.
  • Jev's niche is $0.001 and four seconds per exercise; the whole repository was vibecoded by Claude Opus 5 working autonomously from a conversation.

Quickstart

bash
npm install
cp .env.example .env # TYPESAFE_API_KEY=… (and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=… for the Claude experiments)
npm run dev # http://localhost:5173

Watch out

Copy reviewed against the repo README on 2026-10-15; it was truncated in the headless-experiments section, so later commands and the linked findings documents were not inspected. The repo states the whole thing was vibecoded by Claude Code, and the accuracy, cost and timing figures are its own one-day results, not external benchmarks.
