Jev Adblock

A Chrome extension that blocks ads with no filter lists at all. Each ad-shaped element is described in a few structural fields and sent to Jev as one batched Choice question per element, with every threshold owned by code.

About this project

An open-source AI ad blocker for Chrome, built on TypeSafe AI's Jev model. No filter lists. Jev looks at each suspicious element and decides. Bring your own TypeSafe AI key. Everything else runs in your browser. Install · How it works · vs uBlock Origin · FAQ · Privacy.

Highlights

  • Six categories per candidate, and ad elements are hidden only when the aggregate ad probability clears a per-category threshold with a margin.
  • No runtime dependencies; the extension is Manifest V3 with inlined Lucide icons and a unit test that fails if a content script touches the key.
  • Decisions cache per host and structural fingerprint for seven days, and consistent hits become pre-paint CSS rules.
  • Consent banners and first-party promotions are recognised but never hidden unless you opt in.

Watch out

There is no store listing, so it loads as an unpacked extension from dist/ after a build, and it ships without credentials: you create a key at the TypeSafe console, paste it, and nothing is analysed until you accept the disclosure. The first visit to a page shows ads for the duration of the scan plus Jev latency before they are hidden; caching hides that. Privacy specifics are narrower than they may sound but real: page hostname, title and language go out, along with the element's tag, classes, ARIA role and label, size, position, region, link and iframe hostnames, which heuristics flagged it, and up to 150 characters of visible text. Form values, cookies, full URLs and text outside the candidate element are never sent, pages with a password field or payment iframe are never analysed, and there is no telemetry. Cost is on the order of a tenth of a cent for a first heavy news page, with a default daily budget of 5M tokens that is enforced and a circuit breaker on API failures. Any error, timeout or budget stop hides nothing. The README also notes the descriptor in src/content/describe.ts is the accuracy lever, because Jev cannot read HTML. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
