Ex Regex

A Python library shaped like the re module that finds, replaces, splits and extracts text by meaning: loose finders propose spans and Jev judges each one with a probability. Every match stays a verbatim slice of the input with its offsets, so it can be wrong but never invented.

Highlights

  • Every match is a verbatim slice of the input with its offsets, and Jev can only pick a span a finder proposed, so it can be wrong but never invented.
  • A unit proposes spans (sentences, lines, contacts, money, dates and more); Jev answers a yes-or-no question per span with a probability.
  • Measured on 87 authored scenarios: total due was 100% exact and current refund requests 97% accurate against 47% and 53% for regex baselines.
  • Up to 32 questions share one request, and requests run eight at a time; the two-wording evaluation cost $0.0025 end to end.
  • diff prints only where your regex and the meaning disagree, and --cache with --replay makes CI runs offline with no key.

Quickstart

bash
python -m pip install --pre ex-regex

Watch out

README reviewed 2026-10-17; the accuracy figures come from small authored development sets that the README itself calls not a blind benchmark, the package is an alpha installed with --pre, and live probabilities can shift between runs and models.
