About this project

Can JEV's zero-shot general “intelligence” match established specialist rerankers? We compare ranking quality, time and cost on fixed candidates, using MS MARCO passage and document benchmarks, with TREC-1 WSJ as a transfer test. The interactive reranking simulator replays the fixed WSJ lexical ranking and completed JEV scores, with a separate MS MARCO passage comparison. It reads seeded Neon tables at runtime; WSJ article bodies stay outside both Git and the simulator database.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Passage test reranks 41,042 supplied pairs over 43 judged queries with no new retrieval; Jev lifts MAP over local monoBERT but trails on nDCG@10.
  • Document test scores overlapping windows covering title, headings, and body with MaxP, reaching MAP 0.2790 and P@10 0.8930 over the supplied ranking.
  • WSJ transfer uses a fixed JASSjr-derived BM25 plus query-expansion baseline and reranks only the top 100, keeping positions 101-1,000 in BM25 order.
  • Simulator replays fixed rankings from seeded Neon tables at runtime; WSJ article bodies stay outside Git and response caches stay outside Git.

Watch out

Published neural rows are historical references, not local reproductions or paired tests; the passage BM25 row is a separate full-retrieval baseline. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
