Prune First, Decide Fast: Scalable Semantic Query Processing with JEVDB (arXiv 2610.02046)

A semantic database system that answers filters, joins, classification, and ranking with fast typed decision models and escalates uncertain cases to LLMs. JEVDB-Flash posts the lowest latency on all 21 SemBench queries, and Semantic Bloom Filters remove 87.4% of join candidates on Shelob.

Highlights

  • Uses fast typed decision models for semantic filters, joins, classification, and ranking with LLM escalation.
  • JEVDB-Flash achieves the lowest latency on all 21 evaluated SemBench queries and lowest cost on 19.
  • On Shelob, joins scale to 540K candidate pairs and all queries complete at 95.7%-97.5% mean F1.
  • Semantic Bloom Filters screen out 87.4% of candidate pairs before semantic evaluation.
  • Reusable condition-index scoring reduces reasoning-model escalations by 55.2%.

Watch out

arXiv preprint posted October 1, 2026 (cs.DB) by Zhengle Wang, Hanxu Yan, Fuheng Zhao, and Chunwei Liu. Quality is described as competitive rather than superior, and the latency, cost, and escalation numbers come from the authors' own SemBench and Shelob workloads, so they may not transfer to other schemas.

The request shape barely changes across surfaces; the surrounding contract does. When to call the API directly and when a gateway, a Worker binding, or a router entry earns its extra hop.
