Jev Life

An experimental bench for writing a game ruleset and immediately watching it played: Jev is both the tool that explores the rules and the first player, one typed boolean per legal cell.

Highlights

  • One System One request per turn carries a boolean question for every legal cell, with no heuristic fallback.
  • Rules render from editable templates with auto-filled placeholders, so you rewrite a rule and re-ask.
  • Ships a broker that wraps any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible LLM into a Jev backend for side-by-side play.
  • 461 unit tests, a no-DOM no-network core layer, and no bundler: the browser loads tsc's ES modules directly.

Watch out

The README is in Chinese, with an English version linked from the top. The free trial backends are public and unauthenticated by design, token-metered and funded by the author, so they exist for trying it rather than for batch use, and a fork has those endpoints hidden unless it sets the remote base explicitly. The sealed local key files use AES-256-GCM, but the default passphrase lives in the source and the README says plainly that this is not cryptographic protection: it guards accidental exposure, not an attacker. The design refuses to fall back to a search algorithm when the model is unsure, so a weak ruleset shows up as weak play instead of being quietly rescued. Reading the project means judging the original Game of Life ruleset, since there is no human strong play or opening theory to imitate. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
