Jev The Janitor

A janitor for markdown vaults that asks Jev which bucket each note belongs in. It never deletes a note and never rewrites a body; the most it does is add a frontmatter block or move a suspected secret into quarantine, after local redaction.

About this project

A janitor for markdown vaults. It asks TypeSafe Jev which bucket each note belongs in. It never deletes a note and never rewrites a note's body; the most it does is add a block of frontmatter or move a suspected secret to a quarantine folder. Privacy first. Each note is redacted on your machine (best-effort, format by format) before anything is sent; --offline --show-payload prints exactly what would leave, for free; the bill is shown before the first request; and it never deletes a note.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Dry run is the default: --plan shows what would be sent without sending it, with an estimated bill, and nothing is written without --apply.
  • Notes are redacted on your machine, format by format, before anything is sent; --offline --show-payload prints exactly what would leave, for free.
  • A 250-note demo vault runs offline against a keyword stand-in in under a minute, so the plumbing is testable without a key.
  • What leaves per note is bounded: the redacted title, the vault-relative path, frontmatter key names, a capped body excerpt and sibling note titles.

Watch out

Redaction is described as best-effort and format by format, and the README spends most of its length enumerating exactly which name forms are not matched: any joiner other than whitespace, underscore, hyphen, dot, slash or dash, the surname-first form, a middle initial, the run-together spelling and emphasis inside a name. Forms your notes actually use have to be added to your own denylist. The payload is still substantial by default: the first 16,000 characters of each body, plus the titles of the 80 closest sibling notes, which is a lot of prose about your vault leaving the machine. The over-redaction errs safe rather than silent: a ten-digit run in a filename becomes [PHONE], and the report's own path column stays local. The pre-flight estimate is not a guarantee. The README reports a live run whose bill came in 29 percent over the pessimistic end of the estimate, because short notes dense with dates, numbers and links tokenize far more tightly than prose. Ages come from frontmatter where it parses and fall back to filesystem mtime otherwise, which resets on clone, move or restore until the first --apply stamp records it. The keyword fixture used by --offline is not Jev. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
