PreToolUse hook for Claude Code and Codex that puts a shell-aware rules engine and Jev in front of every tool call, returning allow, ask or block per command and logging the reason and latency behind each decision.

AI agents like Claude Code and Codex run shell commands, read files, and hit the network on your machine. jev-firewall sits between the agent and your system as a PreToolUse hook: every action is checked by deterministic rules plus the Jev decision model, which answers exactly one of allow / ask / block with calibrated confidence. Confident answers act instantly; uncertain ones go to a human.

Watch out
Rules can only block or hand off; the only allows are the safe_commands you delegate in config, which short-circuit before any model runs, so a bad entry there is an unreviewed hole. The allow-list catch is upstream rather than this project's: putting Bash in Claude Code's permissions.allow lets commands bypass hook decisions entirely, per the linked upstream issue, and until you remove it the firewall sees nothing. The model layer needs a TypeSafe or Vercel AI Gateway key and adds a network call to every unmatched action; setup validates the key with one live call and refuses to save a rejected one, but a key that is valid and merely behind a billing gate is still saved. Failing closed also means a broken config stops your agent rather than waving commands through. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
