What is jevmod and who is it for?

A moderation service for communities and apps. Every message gets a probability for spam, scam, harassment, nsfw, off-topic, self-harm, doxxing and sexual content involving minors, and for rules you write in plain English; you set the thresholds and actions, and every decision is logged.

How does Jev moderate a message?

jevmod asks Jev yes/no questions about a message and gets probabilities back — no text generation. Rules you write in plain English are judged the same way. The README quotes about $0.04 per 1,000 messages with all categories on.

What happens when Jev is unreachable?

It fails open: messages are left alone and the failure is logged. Flag-only is the default, so nothing is deleted until you enable that, and self-harm is flag-only by design so a moderator can reach out.

How do I get started?

pip install "jevmod[keys]" then jevmod init stores the key in the OS keyring. Community owners can run the Discord bot, or Telegram and Reddit with fewer commands; developers get a CLI, Python and npm packages or one HTTP call; agents get an MCP server and a Claude Code skill.

What does the benchmark show?

On 2,531 messages from OpenAI's moderation eval, Jigsaw and YouTube spam, the README reports the best AUROC in every compared category in OpenAI's human-labelled set: harassment 0.93 and sexual 0.98 against Llama Guard 3 8B, ShieldGemma 2B and toxic-bert; self-harm 0.99 and minors 0.98 against Llama Guard.

Where does the API key live?

Resolution order everywhere — CLI, API, bots, MCP and the Moderator class — is TYPESAFE_API_KEY in the environment, then the keyring, then a .env in the current directory. jevmod init --env-file writes a mode-600 .env for headless servers, and jevmod init --forget removes the keyring entry.

The README's AUROC and calibration numbers come with caveats in BENCHMARK.md and were re-measured after an engine change; repeat-run noise on AUROC is stated as 0.001. The pasted README truncates inside the Discord commands, and the cost figure is a quoted estimate.
