Highlights
- 2 points on launch. Story URL points at github.com/agodoy21/enigma-jev and the Vercel demo.
- Project README cites head-to-head studies against n-gram judges and XGBoost on the same candidates.
Watch out
Small Show HN. Breaking runs can be long on serverless hosts.
Questions about this entry
Short answers drawn from the linked project or page.
The analyst, and the post is clear about which calls are model-side. The Bombe does the mechanical search: given the right crib it breaks 22 of 25 messages, and ciphertext-only against 10 plugs it breaks 0 of 25, which the author reads as the same wall Bletchley hit.
No, it is stated outright: as a crib selector Jev has no skill at all, and its ranking is no better than the fixed list. The measured value is on the other side of the pipeline, judging whether a trial decryption reads as German, where the post reports AUC 0.9999.
Not on matched data. Per the post, against XGBoost and classical judges on the same kind of traffic it ties. The separation appears only under shift, with XGBoost trained on synthetic traffic and tested on real intercepts deciding 53% of calls while zero-shot Jev holds 97%.
Whether the comparison is fair and how long it runs. The entry copy notes this is an independent project and that breaking a message can take up to 300 seconds on Vercel, and it was a small launch thread with 2 points, so nothing here has third-party replication behind it.
The post does not give one, but it says the demo requires a Jev TypeSafe API key, so the hosted model is doing the judging rather than anything running locally. The live demo is at the project's Vercel URL, and the entry notes that breaking a message can take up to 300 seconds on a serverless host, which is worth knowing before you try a batch.
A Veritasium video about the Enigma machine prompted the question of how Jev would do against the analyst calls actually made at Bletchley Park. The author rebuilt that historical sequence into software rather than running a synthetic benchmark, which is why the result is a mixture of a very strong number and a very weak one.
Just the post. The thread shows 2 points on launch with no comments at all, so there is no independent reaction, no challenge to the methodology, and nobody else reporting a different result. Everything here is one author's own evaluation of their own project.
