Hush

A GitHub Action that labels new issues only when the label probability and the model's own confidence both clear thresholds you set, and otherwise leaves the issue untouched and says why.

About this project

Issue and pull request triage that stays quiet when it isn't sure. A GitHub Action that reads every new issue and labels it — but only when it can say how sure it is. When it can't, it does nothing and tells you why. Real output, 202–530 ms per issue. And the part that matters, from its own first issue — a report that could reasonably be a bug or a documentation problem: It had an answer. It wasn't sure enough. So it said nothing. Because the others talk when they shouldn't.

Highlights

  • All four questions — label, spam, needs more info and duplicate against the 40 most recent open issues — travel in one request.
  • On 800 closed issues from fourteen repositories the 0.80 default acted on 649 at 78% precision; 0.95 cost sixteen points of coverage.
  • The CLI has no --apply: npx hush-triage owner/repo prints a table of what it would do and writes nothing.
  • Label descriptions are the sharp lever: reworded to say what each label is not, the benchmark moved three points and bug reached 97%.

Watch out

Precision is very uneven across label classes: bug reaches 97% while question sits at 40%, because repositories use question as a workflow state rather than a category and several issues maintainers labelled that way are textbook defect reports. Excluding that class the figure is 88% across 508 decisions, and by ecosystem it ranges only from 85% to 90%. Pull request triage never reads the diff body — it sees the title, description, file list with per-file line counts, commit count and whether it is the author's first contribution — and the evidence offered is three real pull requests from mature repositories where raising no flags was the correct answer. The action labels and optionally comments; it never closes, locks, deletes or edits anything, never creates a missing label, and never overwrites a label a person set. The benchmark itself compares against 800 issues that each carry exactly one maintainer-applied label. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
