AI Backends

A self-hostable API server that fronts text, vision and data endpoints across Ollama, LM Studio, LlamaCpp and a long list of hosted providers, and also runs tool-using agents with sessions. Jev appears separately as a decision provider for typed choice, score and noul questions.

About this project

AIBackends is an API server that you can use to integrate AI into your applications. You can run it locally or self-host it. The project supports running open models locally with Ollama, LM Studio or LlamaCpp. It also supports LLM Gateway, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Baseten and ZAI providers.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Agents come in two shapes: a session endpoint with a 30-minute idle expiry, and a one-off endpoint that returns the final answer plus every tool call.
  • Three demo scenarios ship with data — general, customer-support and real-estate — plus SSE streaming so turns and tool calls stream live.
  • The admin dashboard defines agents, custom HTTP tools with JSON Schema arguments, Agent Skills and MCP servers whose tools are auto-discovered.
  • Provider keys can be set at runtime from the dashboard, override environment variables and are masked in responses; config persists to a gitignored file.

Watch out

The framing is explicitly aimed at non-coders wiring AI into app builders, which is worth knowing before you treat this as a library; self-hosting is required for the online builders and Railway is the host the author mentions testing. Agent sessions live in memory only and expire after thirty idle minutes, so anything durable needs your own storage. Tools in the bundled scenarios run against demo data, and HTTP tools you define point at endpoints you choose, which is a real trust decision. Admin configuration, including API keys, is written to a gitignored JSON file on disk that the README tells you to protect like a .env, and all admin APIs require a bearer token in production. The README also does not document authentication on the non-admin endpoints beyond a general access token variable, request rate limits, or what running it costs. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
