Jev Mode

Python library and CLI that moves bulk semantic judgments — ticket triage, stale-file tagging, bug or question routing — out of the agent's context into typed Jev questions, with a measured comparison against an in-context control.

I kept watching coding agents burn context on decisions that aren't hard - triage 400 tickets, tag 600 files, route to one of six teams. jev-mode moves those verdicts to a typed-judgment model. I A/B'd it: 78% fewer tokens, 16x less work-attributable input, accuracy 96.1% vs 93.7%. Python, no deps, MIT.

About this project

Cut your coding agent's token use on bulk semantic judgments. Your agent burns tokens deciding the same kind of small question over and over: which team owns this ticket, is this file stale, does this message report a bug, which category is this row. jev-mode moves those judgments out of the model context and into TypeSafe Jev, a typed-judgment model: you send one item and a map of typed questions, and you get answers constrained to the options you supplied, each with a calibrated confidence.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Over 1,000 triage judgments: 7,987,983 total tokens in-context against 1,770,917 through jev-mode, and 40 model round trips against 14.
  • The author reports accuracy parity rather than superiority — the control arm scored between 93.4% and 98.2% across runs, on a synthetic corpus.
  • The gate fails open: no key, no network, or a slow or malformed answer lets the step through and records the reason instead.
  • coverage counts what actually got judged, because one real session with 42 subagents showed 5.74% of steps routed, not every step.

Watch out

It is not on PyPI, so plain pip install jev-mode fails and you install from the git URL; it is Python 3.8+ with the standard library only. The benchmark corpus was synthetic, so the token ratio is the durable result and accuracy should be re-measured on your own data. The author also reports losing 5.3 accuracy points to bad question design before fixing it. Most importantly, a gate wired into the host's hook system does not protect subagents: measured across 339 subagent sessions and 29,146 tool calls there were zero hook invocations, and the retained event table keeps only the newest 200 rows per task. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.
