1 Million Emojis

Shared 1,000 by 1,000 emoji canvas where Jev paints alongside visitors: after each stroke it picks a keyword-matching emoji and a named position relative to that stroke, and answers whether the stroke is unfinished.

About this project

A shared 1,000 × 1,000 emoji canvas where humans paint and Jev paints alongside them. Live: chriswijnia.com/lab/emoji. No account: pick an emoji and drag. You have three hundred cells of ink, and five come back every second. Everyone's strokes arrive live.

Quoted from the project's README. Read the full README.

Highlights

  • Only the drawing is sent: stroke shape and endpoint, nearby emoji identified by name, and a small text picture of adjacent cells.
  • The pick is sampled from the model's probabilities, so it lands wider the less sure Jev is.
  • Options are typed by position as well as by emoji, with places named above the line, at its end, inside the loop.
  • Calls go through Vercel's AI Gateway first with TypeSafe as the fallback, plus per-visitor rate limits and a daily spend cap.

Watch out

The public repository is a mirror: it is copied from the site's monorepo on every change made there, so pull requests are read but applied upstream, which means a fix you need locally will not land here. Visitors are given 300 cells of ink and five come back every second, and each has a rate limit with a daily spend cap on the site, so the live behavior is bounded rather than open-ended. What is sent to the model is deliberately narrow: the stroke's shape and where it ends, the emoji around it by name, and a small text picture of the nearby cells, with nothing about who painted it. The npm test command covers the packages' unit tests only and makes no Jev calls. Both `packages/emoji` and `packages/jev` are MIT licensed. Copy reviewed against the repository README on 2026-10-04, not from running it.

The request shape barely changes across surfaces; the surrounding contract does. When to call the API directly and when a gateway, a Worker binding, or a router entry earns its extra hop.
