JevForest: Path Voting for Budgeted Feature Acquisition (arXiv 2610.10615)
An exploratory study of JevForest, a budgeted feature-acquisition policy that aggregates path-dependent proposals from bootstrapped trees and queries Jev for semantic answers. On small held-out samples it beats static and random orderings on AG News but not on TREC.

Highlights
- Aggregates path-dependent tree proposals, weights them by global training information gain, and labels with a shared masked classifier.
- Four-question forest acquisition reaches 0.729 on AG News (n=48) versus 0.667 static gain ranking and 0.583 random ordering.
- On TREC (n=24) the ordering reverses: forest 0.667 versus 0.750 and 0.833 for the alternatives.
- Batching all eight questions beats four sequential forest queries on accuracy, measured cost, and latency.
- Offline MiniBooNE reaches 0.845±0.010 at ten features and 0.885±0.008 at forty features.
Watch out
arXiv preprint posted October 7, 2026 (stat.ML, cs.LG) by Yu Yan. Samples are tiny (n=48 and n=24), and the author states the findings are exploratory and do not support a general path-voting advantage: value depends on the task, predictor, and whether budgets count questions or actual query costs.
