How do the edit-time rule checks avoid false blocks?

They catch small instruction violations at edit time with file and line citations, using local filters plus deterministic code search before one batched yes-or-no request per rule. Uncertain scores get a second pass with more context.

Why is Jev compaction faster than the built-in summary?

The compaction hook keeps the rows that matter and makes them the post-compaction context, with no summary written. Without the function-hooks flag, the host compacts as usual and adds nothing.

Which key do I need, and what happens with no key?

Set either a TypeSafe or OpenRouter key; without one the hooks stay silent. A key starting with the OpenRouter prefix routes there, and an explicit provider pin restricts reads to its own variable.

What keeps routine prompts and generated code out of review?

Short prompts, slash commands, and hash lines never reach the model, vendored and generated paths are never judged, and per-file and per-session block caps stop unlandable repairs from looping.

How do I install it, and which flag do I need?

On Claude Code, add the marketplace and install the plugin; on Pi, pi install git:github.com/0x7067/claude-jev. It needs only python3 and its standard library. Compaction and the /claude-jev settings pane additionally need CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS=1, which is off by default and undocumented; leave auto-compact on so those runs route through Jev.

What false-positive rate should I expect from the rule blocks?

The README re-scored the same 247 accepted edits at v0.23.0 and 23 of them were blocked, about 9.3 percent. The v0.21.0 run blocked 22, 8.9 percent, with 17 of those under a single repository's own comment-ban rule. That is the honest cost of letting the hook second-guess edits you already accepted.

Where do rules come from, and what does the pinned binary do?

From the instruction files you already keep: CLAUDE.md, the user-level one, nested AGENTS.md, and .claude/rules/* or .cursor/rules/*. Each file is classified once per hash and cached under ~/.claude. The comparators use ast-grep 0.45.3, a 51 MB binary pinned by sha256 that a detached process fetches into ~/.claude/jev-bin; every hook still works without it.
